39 Stitches. That’s What Wang Leehom Needed On His Face After Nasty Fall At Concert
Mandopop star Wang Leehom gave fans quite the scare after suffering a nasty fall during his concert in Chengdu on July 4.
The 50-year-old was performing his opening number, ‘Heaven and Earth Dragon’, when his foot got caught in one of his safety cables, causing him to fall face-first onto the edge of the metal stage.
The impact landed on his left ear, where he was wearing a hard in-ear monitor, shattering the cartilage in his outer ear.
He also sustained a deep gash on his left cheek, with concert videos showing blood streaming down the side of his face.
Despite the injuries, Leehom quickly got back on his feet and continued performing for the crowd.
He later revealed on Instagram that there was so much bleeding from his left ear that he had to complete the rest of the three-hour concert using only the monitor in his right ear.
"As they say, the show must go on," he wrote.
"When you're performing live in front of 40,000 fans, you don't feel pain. So no, it didn't hurt."
After the concert, Leehom was taken to hospital, where doctors stitched his ear with 27 stitches, and closed the wound on his face with another 12.
Thankfully, a CT scan confirmed that he had not suffered any brain or skull injuries.
"The blood looked frightening, but there were no more serious injuries," he reassured fans.
Leehom also shared photos of the injuries on Instagram, including one showing the deep cuts on his left ear and cheek before treatment, and another of his heavily bandaged ear after surgery.
"Thank you all for your love, prayers, and well wishes. I'm doing well, and I feel incredibly lucky and blessed that it wasn't any worse. I've received all of your love, and I'm sending it right back to you, many times over," he wrote.
His studio later said a preliminary investigation found that the accident was caused by an operational error involving the stage's safety cable system.
The team has since launched an internal investigation and will conduct a full review of its stage safety procedures.
Despite his injuries returned to the stage the very next day after doctors cleared him to perform.
Ironically, this isn't the first time 'Heaven and Earth Dragon Scale' has been linked to an onstage mishap for the singer.
During his Hangzhou concert in May 2025, Leehom nearly fell off the stage after a lift platform descended prematurely as he was walking towards it.
Although he managed to regain his balance in time, fan-captured videos of the incident sparked concern online, with many calling for stricter safety measures.
At the time, his manager described the scare as "a lapse in the team's safety management" and said all equipment and safety protocols would be thoroughly reviewed.
