If you’re on the hunt for the best waterproof foundation—one that won’t budge through sweat, tears, or a cannonball into the deep end—you’ve come to the right place. These long-lasting formulas are made to stay put through sweat, humidity, and full-on water exposure without streaking, caking, or disappearing by midday.
But what makes a foundation waterproof? “It’s all about the ingredients,” says Sherry Backman, a cosmetic chemist based in Brattleboro, Vermont. “Waterproof foundations resist breakdown and removal when exposed to water by using hydrophobic, or water-repelling, ingredients like silicones, film-forming polymers, and waxes." The end result? Flexible, breathable films that adhere to skin and, the case of some formulas, still feel like a lightweight foundation.
Best Overall: Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation, $53

Best Shade Range: MAC Studio Fix Fluid SPF15 24HR Matte Foundation + Oil Control, $39

Best for Oily Skin: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup, $52
Best Long-Lasting: L'Oréal Paris Makeup Infallible Up to 32 Hour Fresh Wear Lightweight Foundation, $17
Whether you’re headed to a beach wedding, a high-sweat workout, or just want your face to look fresh all day without a single touch-up, these are the best waterproof foundations that truly go the distance. Heads up: Backman points out that while “waterproof” currently doesn’t have an official legal definition in the U.S., brands are expected to back up that claim with solid testing so that you can expect serious staying power wherever the day takes you. These are the ones that hold up.

Why it’s worth it: If you’re after a long-wear foundation that doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a mask, Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation is a breathable and buildable formula that stays put up to 24 hours. It’s packed with skin-nourishing ingredients like moringa seed extract to help shield against pollution and yacon root juice, which has prebiotic properties known to support the skin’s microbiome. "I know what you're thinking, and I'm with you: A waterproof foundation sounds like a breakout waiting to happen, especially if you have naturally acne-prone skin. But that's not the case! This gives me full coverage with a truly weightless feel—it really does blend in seamlessly—and leaves my skin looking and feeling surprisingly fresh. And it stayed put, even through two long walks in dog's-breath levels of humidity. By the end of the day, it still looked natural and matte, and not at all cakey." —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: At Allure HQ, discovering drugstore gems that perform like high-end products is kind of our superpower, and Maybelline’s Super Stay Lumi-Matte Foundation nails the assignment. This long-wearing, medium-to-full coverage formula keeps shine in check while delivering a soft, satin-matte finish that still looks like real skin. Thanks to amino acids, it remains flexible and breathable (never stiff or chalky), and it endures well through sweat, humidity, and—as our tester can confirm—even in the most tropical of locales.

“I never really wear makeup to the beach, but I brought the this foundation to my bachelorette in Tulum and wore it to a day club—it held up through tequila, sweat, and straight-up tropical humidity. It might not me marketed as waterproof but how it got me through that day makes it basically waterproof in my eyes.” —Angela Takoshis, shopping market editor

Why it’s worth it: It’s not every day you come across a matte, waterproof foundation that feels light on your skin—and has SPF to top it off. MAC’s Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 delivers buildable, medium coverage that controls oil, evens tone, and holds up all day without caking or creasing. “This formula has a more natural finish,” says Rose Siard, a makeup artist based in Houston, Texas. “It’s buildable and long-wearing but may have a slight learning curve due to its dry-down time.” Still, it’s packed with skin-care ingredients like sodium hyaluronate (a deeply hydrating form of hyaluronic acid), willow bark extract to gently exfoliate and keep pores clear, and algae extract to help maintain skin balance throughout the day. And with one of the most inclusive shade ranges out there, finding your perfect match is basically a sure thing. Just remember: SPF 15 alone isn’t enough (derms recommend at least SPF 30), but this layers great over sunscreen.

“Ignore the fact that I may have picked a shade a little too light, but thank goodness it blended in seamlessly. I usually steer clear of matte formulas, but I loved how this one didn’t leave my skin looking flat or dull. It stood up to a two-mile walk in 90-degree heat with only a hint of my oily T-zone starting to poke through. At the eight-hour mark, I still looked photo-ready, even if I was personally ready for bed.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Make Up For Ever
Why it’s worth it: If you’re after a foundation that truly looks and feels like a second skin, Make Up For Ever’s HD Skin Waterproof Natural Matte Foundation “is one of the most skin-like finishes out there,” says Siard. The secret is in the brand’s Micro-Skin System, which the brand claims flexes with your facial movements for a seamless, undetectable finish. Glycerin keeps skin comfortably hydrated, while silica helps minimize shine throughout the day. The waterproof, sweat-resistant formula is especially great for oily or combination skin types who want their base to last through heat, humidity, and long hours.

Not sure of your shade? The brand’s online shade finder is a great starting point. Just keep in mind: “It’s water- and sweat-resistant but may not have the same wear time on all skin types,” says Siard. “It also dries a little darker than it looks in the bottle, so that shade matching can be a bit tricky.”

Estée Lauder
Why it’s worth it: If your liquid foundation is already melting by lunchtime, oily skin might be to blame, but Estée Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup is a buildable, long-wear formula that sticks around through it all. “This is one of my all-day go-tos,” says Siard. “It’s thin and buildable, has incredible wear time, a great shade range, and has even passed my garden hose waterproof test. Being from Houston with 75% humidity all the time, it never lets me down.” Translation: If it can handle Texas heat, this sweat-proof formula can handle your T-zone.

If you have dry skin, don’t skip your prep, according to Siard. So, layering on a hydrating primer or moisturizer first can make all the difference in getting that smooth, even finish.

L'Oréal Paris
Why it’s worth it: You probably don’t need your foundation to last 32 hours, but it’s nice to know it can. L’Oréal Paris Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation provides buildable coverage with a natural, skin-like finish that withstands heat, humidity, and long days (or nights). “It’s lightweight and breathable, easy to build, and very photo-friendly,” says makeup artist Rose Siard. The formula is non-comedogenic, making it a solid pick for oily, combination, and even mature skin. And with SPF 25 built in, it gives you a little extra sun protection while your foundation’s living its best long-wear life.

Waterproof foundations can hold up in the pool, but it depends on the formula. “Chlorinated water can be especially tough on makeup, so look for ingredients like dimethicone or acrylates copolymers that help create a flexible, long-lasting film,” says Backman. For both pool and ocean, “film-formers and coated pigments are critical to maintain color and coverage under wet conditions,” says Backman. These help your foundation stay put and maintain coverage, even after a swim.
Foundations like Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Makeup incorporate these types of film-formers, making them better suited for water exposure. Just remember that even the most water-resistant formulas can break down over time, especially if you're rubbing your face or towel-drying, so touch-ups (and sunscreen!) are still essential.
All waterproof makeup has the potential to clog pores, but not always. “Occlusive films (where a layer of product is deposited on top of the skin) may trap sweat, oil, and bacteria, especially on acne-prone or sensitive skin,” says Backman. These long-wearing formulas can also be tougher to remove, and “improper cleansing can leave residue that irritates or blocks pores.” The good news is that many waterproof options use lightweight silicones, such as dimethicone, and are labeled non-comedogenic—meaning they’re formulated to avoid clogging pores. Backman recommends using oil-based, micellar, or dual-phase cleansers to thoroughly remove the product and steering clear of heavy occlusives in hot, humid conditions if you're prone to breakouts.

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide shade range inclusive of consumers with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is its packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?
For our review of the best waterproof foundations, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.
A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.
After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
