Five years after filing for bankruptcy, veteran Taiwanese comedian and host Peng Chia Chia is still working tirelessly to pay off millions in debt.

The 69-year-old racked up a whopping NT$240mil (S$11.6mil) debt from failed movie ventures.

Even after mortgaging his house, he still owed NT$120mil (S$5.7mil).

In recent years, he has thrown himself into debt repayment through various means, from live stream sales to selling kimchi and even exploring NFT projects.

In April this year, he was spotted at a chicken farm selling free-range eggs.

Most recently, a netizen shared a video of him live streaming from a sweet potato field in China, where he promoted the produce from dawn until dusk. “At 70, he still has to fight this hard… but he has no choice…. He’s admirable and responsible!” the netizen wrote on Threads.

Chia Chia once admitted that the crushing debt once drove him to suicidal thoughts, but he refused to let failure define him.

“If I give up, that will define me,” he said. “Some say Peng Chia Chia has hit rock bottom, but I actually want to see what rock bottom really looks like.”

Netizens flooded the comments with encouragement, praising his perseverance.

“It’s great that he’s willing to humble himself to repay debts,” said one user, another wrote: “He’s truly a responsible man; at least he won’t drag his family down. Wishing him success.”

In 2024, Chia Chia revealed he had already repaid about half of his debt, however recent reports still suggest he owes money to more than 60 creditors and 30 moneylenders.

Chia Chia told the media that financial matters were being handled by his manager, and that he remains focused solely on working and earning to pay off what he owes.
