There will always be people out there who make you lose faith in humanity.

In a recent episode of TVB's infotainment show Scoop, it was reported that a 72-year-old woman, Helen, had lost all her savings to scammers.

Helen is currently living alone and only gets by with financial aid from the government.

In January, Helen received a social media invite from a man claiming to be Heavenly King Andy Lau and the two started talking.

Helen shared that she's not even a fan of the real Andy Lau, and isn't someone who would “spend money to go for his concerts".

She, however, "never [suspected]" the other party was a scammer because they very soon sent her a photo of Andy's passport. She even exclaimed: "If you dare to cheat me, then I dare to give you [my money]".

The so-called 'Andy' then gained Helen's sympathy by repeatedly borrowing money from her, claiming that he's ill and needed the cash for his medication.

Helen eventually made two large transfers of HK$10280 (S$1779) and HK$10080 (S$1744) to 'Andy'. This is on top of countless small transactions.

Soon after, someone who claimed to be "Andy Lau's daughter, Hanna" joined their conversation too, and claimed to be 13 years old and studying in the US.

She even started calling Helen "godmother" then "mum", which helped to win the soft-hearted granny's trust.

Helen began lending money to 'Hanna' too, for what the latter claimed to be for hospital deposits and dolls. 'Hanna' also lied that her foreign teacher had asked her to pay for textbooks, school materials and meal coupons, which were all eventually paid for by Helen.

The compassionate granny, who was a teacher, also really doted on 'Hanna' and would constantly lend her money for whatever "emergencies" she had.

In total, Helen gave more than S$1,638 to 'Hanna'. She even pawned her late mother's belongings, borrowed money from others for the girl, and was at some point left with less than HK$100 (S$16.35) in her bank account.

Yet even at this point, Helen didn't believe 'Hanna' and 'Andy' were scammers. She also refused to listen when the Scoop host repeatedly tried to convince her to stop interacting with them.

'Hanna' subsequently told Helen that she would return to Hong Kong on May 1 and would sell her mother's jewelry to pay Helen back.

At that time, Helen was still so trusting that she said to the camera: "If I don't get to see 'Hanna Lau' by May 2, I would bow and apologise to the entire Scoop crew in front of your camera. I'd say sorry for being stupid and believing that this isn't a scam".

Unfortunately, as of May 2, 'Hanna' did not show up as promised.

She fibbed that she was stuck at Singapore's customs as her visa had expired. She also claimed that she was fined HK$2000 (S$346) and was sent to juvenile prison.

This was the final blow that impelled Helen to finally block 'Hanna', who said that she'd "take the HK$40,000 (S$6,547) [she] lost as school fees" for the learning lesson.

Despite that, she still believes the person who texted her was indeed Andy and his daughter.

She, however, fulfilled her promise and bowed to the Scoop crew, apologising for "not being able to bring 'Hanna' back" and wasting their time and effort thus far.

In a subsequent interview, Helen revealed that she did unblock 'Hanna' once as the latter told her that she'd returned to Hong Kong.

When 'Hanna' went MIA again, Helen decided to file a police report, causing the other party to delete their Whatsapp account and completely vanish.
