A Sip of Heritage: Starbucks Opens a Unique Two-Storey Outlet in Chinatown Singapore
Sips, strokes, and stories—experience Starbucks in the heart of Chinatown
Tucked along the bustling yet historic Smith Street, a new Starbucks has quietly opened its doors—but this one is a little different.
Housed within a beautifully restored heritage shophouse at 37 Smith Street, the two-storey outlet seamlessly blends the charm of old Chinatown with the modern comforts of your go-to coffee spot.
The first thing visitors will notice is the striking red Chinese characters “星巴克” (the transliteration of “Starbucks”) carved into the pillars by the entrance. These aren’t just decorative touches—they’re hand-sculpted using traditional techniques, offering a nod to the area’s deep-rooted Chinese heritage.
Above the entrance, the same characters shine in gold on a black signboard, carefully crafted in collaboration with Yong Gallery, known for their mastery in Chinese calligraphy and wood carving. It’s a bold visual statement that anchors this store firmly in the cultural narrative of Chinatown.
Step inside, and you’ll find an interior that respects the past while embracing the present. Rich wooden tones, curved seating, and latticework accents create a warm and familiar feel. But it’s the art that steals the show—a large mural by Singaporean artist Tiffany Lovage wraps around the wall, telling the story of Chinatown through vibrant depictions of local life, community, and coffee culture.
Another mural upstairs blends classic Chinese landscape aesthetics with modern design, creating a calm atmosphere perfect for conversations or quiet work sessions.
Local Touches, Global Brand
This store goes beyond aesthetics—it also celebrates local talent. A special merchandise collection exclusive to the Smith Street outlet features work by local calligrapher JunleFont, offering customers a uniquely Singaporean keepsake to take home with their flat white.

Adding a playful element to the space is a Merlion-inspired Bearista plush—equal parts adorable and iconic—cradling a miniature Starbucks cup. It’s a cheeky reminder of how the global brand adapts itself with local flavour in every corner of the world.
More Than Just Coffee
The Smith Street store is a fresh chapter for Starbucks in Singapore, not only serving coffee but also storytelling, art, and community. With operating hours from 7:30AM to 10:00PM daily, it’s poised to become a favourite spot for both locals and visitors exploring the cultural heart of the city.
Whether you’re seeking a caffeine fix, a quiet corner, or just a taste of tradition with a contemporary twist, this Chinatown gem is worth the stop.
