Blazing through the global techno scene with her acid-driven sound, Marie Vaunt is a force in full command. The Japanese-American producer and DJ has carved out a lane entirely her own, fusing thunderous basslines with hypnotic vocals and blistering acid lines. With over 7.6 million Spotify streams, a #1 on Beatport with ‘Dark Room’, and the title of best-selling female techno artist in 2024, Marie isn’t just rising — she’s erupting.

Whether it’s her hauntingly powerful track ‘Kurayami’ or the 303-fueled storm of ‘That Acid’, Marie Vaunt is delivering dancefloor weapons that hit both body and soul. As she continues her streak of chart-smashing releases and global shows, we caught up with Marie ahead of her set at MARQUEE Singapore on Friday, 15 August to talk studio gear, sonic identity, and the electrifying force behind her acid revival.

You’ve said you were introduced to DJing at an early age. What was the spark that drew you to it, and how did you pick up the craft?

I got my start on turntables, just mixing records for fun. I instantly fell in love with the process—the technical challenge, the creativity, the energy. That passion quickly grew into something more and I knew I wanted to make it my career.

‘Kurayami’ is such a great track that blends haunting Japanese melodies with dark techno. What inspired that direction?

I’ve been pushing a style I like to call "Japanese acid techno", blending traditional Japanese instruments and vocals with my high-energy acid-influenced techno sound. It’s a reflection of my roots and my deep appreciation for the culture. I wanted to fuse that identity into my music in a way that feels raw and powerful.

You also released ‘That Acid’ in June, which seems to be the latest in your acid-focused direction. What’s driving your focus on that raw 303 sound?

I’ve been championing the acid sound for years and ‘That Acid’ is one of my most supported tracks to date. There’s something timeless and infectious about that raw 303 energy. It just resonates with both old school ravers and newer fans alike.

If you could time-travel and drop one of your 2025 tracks in the rave scene of the ’90s, which one would it be and why?

‘That Acid’ for sure. It’s got that classic ’90s rave DNA. Raw and punchy. It would’ve lit up any warehouse back in the day.

Most recently you remixed Molchat Doma’s ‘Ne Vdvoem’. How did that come about, and what was your approach to reimagining their track?

I’ve been a longtime fan of Molchat Doma so I reached out and that led to the opportunity to remix one of their tracks. It was such an honor to rework a song by a band I genuinely love.

You’ve collaborated with a range of producers this year—from Belocca to Mha Iri to The YellowHeads. What do you look for in a creative partner, and how do collabs push your sound forward?

For me, collaboration is all about synergy. Our sounds have to complement each other and there needs to be mutual respect and harmony in the creative process. That’s when the magic happens.

In the studio, how has your creative process evolved this past year — any new techniques, equipment, or inspirations?

The core of my process has stayed pretty consistent but I recently upgraded to Serum 2, which has opened up some new possibilities. I’m still using my trusty TD-3 for those acid lines. It’s simple but powerful.

You’re set to headline MARQUEE Singapore this August. What are your thoughts on your upcoming visit and what can fans expect?

It’s my debut in Singapore and I’m beyond excited. I’ve heard incredible things about MARQUEE and I can’t wait to bring my acid sound to that stage.
