After Wearing ’Em Once, You Won’t Want To Hike Without These 27 Shoes

1. Altra Lone Peak 9 trail running shoes that, when I first tried them on (a few models ago, but still...) basically felt like they dropped out of heaven. Altras are known for their super-wide toe box that allows for toe splay, as well as a "zero drop" heel that lets your feet move more naturally. Combined, they're the comfiest trail runners ever, not to mention light weight, quick-drying, and as perfect for short jaunts as they are for thru-hikes.

The Lone Peak is a towering style for backpackers and is spotted super commonly on long-distance trails. While heavier boots were the norm for decades, the community seems to have switched to lower-profile and lightweight styles without looking back. Even with my trips capping out at about a week (coming for you one day, AT), I can attest that the trail runner is the way to go, especially on high-mileage days. The light weight is just so much easier on your leg muscles. And as for waterproofness, I tend to prefer non-waterproof or Gore-Tex models. While it's great to keep your feet dry, they're not as breathable, and when inevitably they DO get wet, they take longer to dry. Not the Lone Peaks! I've been caught in the rain in them a major way, and they dry pretty quickly. Or at least quick enough to get moving the next morning!

3. *OR* Altra Experience Wild 3 Trail Running Shoes for the Altra treatment with an even more rugged shell. Look at that extremely grippy traction! I took these bad boys out for their first spin last month on the most intense backpacking terrain I've ever been on in the Eastern Sierras, and they helped me feel SO confident...even when I was hiking down into a valley full of snow and thunder. Long story!

I thought it'd be hard to beat the Lone Peaks, but for consistently slippery terrain or super rocky trails, these can really make you feel sure-footed! They're just cushioned enough for a nice ride while still letting you sense the ground beneath your feet. The best compliment I can give them? I didn't notice I was wearing them, even when putting on miles for three days straight fresh out of the box. A new Altra for the arsenal.

4. Danner Mountain 600 boots that are the Platonic ideal of a hiking boot, are they not? A waterproof suede upper and Vibram soles combine to make these ultra-classics beloved for a reason: they just get the job done.

5. On Cloudrock Low Waterproof Hiking Shoes lovers of their Cloud running shoes will be stoked to see them adapted for trail life. Bounce and cushion, plus a waterproof upper, would be good enough, but the lush, nature-inspired colorways sweeten the deal even more.

6. Chaco Z1 sandals for anyone who likes to hike with their dogs, especially if they might encounter water crossings. Every single strap on Chacos is adjustable, making them an amazing option for a near-custom fit that supports sturdy hiking. The soles are grippy, they have amazing arch support, and I couldn't recommend them more highly!

7. Or a pair of Chaco Rapid Pro Z/2 Rapid Pro Sandals designed specifically for rafting, if your trip happens to include time on the river. They're available with or without toe straps, but I personally love the toe straps. They make me feel super sturdy when I wear them hiking, which I do often! The Rapid Pros are ~amphibious~ sandals designed for rafting, but are perfect for camping and hiking if you know you're gonna take a dip in a nearby stream or suspect rain might be coming. I'm never mad at extra grip.

These aren't my first pair of Chacos, but they ARE my first pair with the controversial toe strap, and although I didn't think I'd be a fan, they proved me wrong! They really do make for better hiking since your feet can't slide back and forth as much. Sturdy steps! I got a bit of a blister on the inside of my foot when I first got them, but that's to be expected from any new sandal, in my experience. Just make sure to break them in before really putting on the miles!

Promising review: "I have several pairs of Chacos. I wear them throughout the summer for everyday, and when kayaking, swimming, wading in lakes, hiking, etc. I prefer the toe loop style Z/2 classic, which these are. I especially like the newly designed, thicker Vibram outsole, which adds protection from rocks, durability, and grip on wet surfaces. I also like the new pattern, Eddy Fungi. 8. Orthofeet waterproof othepedic hiking boots if you refuse to let foot pain hold you back from enjoying the great outdoors. They have an orthotic insole with great arch support to ease heel pain, are waterproof, and have a wide toe box to let those guys move how they're meant to.

Danner Trail 2650 Hiking Shoes, whose name is taken from the 2650 miles thru-hikers trek to get through the entire Pacific Crest Trail, so you know they have all the features they would need and none that they don't. Long-distance hikers are known for their efficiency and simplicity, after all! You may not be doing thousands of miles this year, but that doesn't mean you don't deserve the best shoes for the job.

Promising review: "I bought these in February for a three-month trip that involved lots of hiking. They got plenty of use on all types of trails, including trails with slippery scree, and are the best shoes I've had for bouldering in Joshua Tree. The grip and traction of the soles are unbelievable. They are sharp-looking as well. The fit is comfy and well cushioned for my medium-width feet — I wear them with low-top Columbia hiking socks. I live in Oregon and have not worn them in the rain or mucky conditions. I'd use my high-top waterproof hiking boots for that. I do have a high arch and probably should not have bought them, but I couldn't resist. 13. Merrell Moab 3 waterproof hiking boots if you're looking for an outdoor shoe with a little more ankle support and waterproofing prowess. Splashing through puddles and mud is fun and games until the temps drop, so good on you for keeping your feet warm and ready to take you wherever you want to roam.

Promising review: "This is the best hiking boot ever. They are so comfortable, and there are a lot of cushions exactly where you need. The traction is very impressive, traversing rocks, flat, and sandy trails. I felt very stable. 14. Or Merrell Moab 3 Hiking Shoes if you dig that silhouette but want a more streamlined, non-waterproof version. There can be real upsides to shoes that aren't "waterproof," namely a quicker dry time, so they're worth checking out if your heart's previously been set on Gore-Tex. I have a previous model of these shoes and really love them. The grippiest hikers I've ever tried!

Promising review: "So impressed with the Moab 3 hiking shoes! I usually hike in mid-height boots, but decided to try these since they are lighter and take up less room in my suitcase. I actually bought some for my two teens as well. The shoes arrived right in time for our week-long vacation in Moab, coincidentally. Now I understand why these shoes are called Moab! 15. Teva Universal Sport sandals you can pair with socks for extra comfort or rock as-is on summer hikes you'll remember forever. Their famous Velcro straps hold in even the sandiest, wettest, and most rugged conditions. I've worn mine everywhere from day hikes to vacations in Europe to running errands, and they're showing no signs of slowing down. Oh, I also recommend them for shoes to pop on at the crag or at the rock climbing gym between climbs.

In short, Tevas are classic for a reason! The price is right, they're a great outdoor shoe, and they're sturdier than they look. Just do it.
