KUALA LUMPUR: AirAsia Malaysia has officially commenced its Kuala Lumpur–Semarang service, which connects Malaysia with the capital city of Central Java in Indonesia.

In a statement, the budget carrier said the new route strengthened its position as the largest foreign low-cost carrier (LCC) operating in Indonesia with the widest international network into the country.

It said the return of international flights to Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport gives travellers greater access to Central Java’s cultural landmarks, business hubs, and emerging economic zones.

The service is also expected to enhance bilateral trade and investment opportunities, while supporting Indonesia’s target of attracting up to 16 million foreign tourists in 2025.

"With Jenderal Ahmad Yani Airport reinstated as one of 36 international airports under Ministerial Decree No. KM 37 of 2025, AirAsia’s return is timely. The Kuala Lumpur–Semarang route strengthens tourism flows, business activity, and investment into Central Java, supporting the national agenda to position aviation as a key driver of economic growth," said Central Java governor Ahmad Luthfi.

AirAsia Malaysia CEO Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra said the carrier's entry into Semarang reflects its commitment to growing secondary cities, not just major hubs, and providing affordable, convenient and direct access for travellers. 

"With Semarang’s heritage-rich Kota Lama, Lawang Sewu, Sam Poo Kong temple and world-famous lumpia, this city is a true cultural gem waiting to be explored,” he added.
