KUALA LUMPUR: AmBank Group, through AmGroup Foundation, has installed Starlink internet connectivity at Kampung Sungai Gayung in Muadzam Shah, Pahang, making it the first Orang Asli village in the Rompin district to receive internet access.

In a statement, the banking group said the initiative, undertaken in collaboration with Global Peace Foundation Malaysia, also involved converting the village's Rumah Adat into a Digital Resource Centre.

The centre is equipped with refurbished laptops, study tables, lamps and books for villagers, particularly children and young people.

AmBank has also installed additional solar-powered street lights and distributed food supplies and pre-loved clothing to the community.

Employees from the AmBank Volunteer Network, mainly from its wholesale banking division, are conducting digital literacy classes to familiarise villagers with digital tools.

The initiative follows similar efforts last year, when AmBank provided solar street lighting, food supplies and clothing to Kampung Sungai Gayung and Kampung Batu Putih.

The group has also undertaken the reconstruction of the Rumah Adat in Kampung Batu Putih.

AmBank Group managing director of wholesale banking Datuk Jamzidi Khalid said the programme was aimed at improving access to digital resources and educational facilities.

He said internet connectivity could also enable villagers to explore online business opportunities.

“For us, this is not just about providing equipment or facilities; it is about helping create an environment where children can learn, families can stay connected and the community can explore new opportunities by venturing into online business platforms, for instance.

“We hope that the resources provided will be put to good use and that the relationships built through this effort will continue to grow beyond this programme,” Jamzidi said.

Global Peace Foundation Malaysia chief executive officer Dr Teh Su Thye said the Digital Resource Centre would provide children with a place to study and villagers with access to online resources.
