Amanda Seyfried has spoken out over Elizabeth Holmes’ 11-year jail sentence, explaining that she ‘feels’ for her children.

Earlier today, the disgraced Theranos CEO, 39, surrendered to Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas, to begin her stint behind bars, after she was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy charges last year.

In a huge coincidence, Seyfried – who starred as the entrepreneur on Hulu series The Dropout – appeared on Good Morning America to discuss her new series, The Crowded Room.

During the chat, talk turned to the mom-of-two and her prison sentence when host Michael Strahan said: ‘Timing is everything. You’re here on the same day that Elizabeth Holmes is going to prison.’

‘I heard that. Today’s the big … Weird,’ the Mean Girls actress replied. ‘I feel for those kids.

‘There’s two kids that are hanging in the balance here. As a parent, as a mom… I don’t know.

‘Life’s not fair, but in a lot of ways it’s fair. For her in particular.’

Last November, Holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy, for lying about claims that her company had designed a machine that could monitor and diagnose multiple health conditions using a droplet of blood.

She founded Theranos in 2003, and alleged that they had developed the Edison – a machine that could perform lab tests with blood taken by a finger prick.

Holmes and her business partner, Sunny Balwani, were able to raise more than $945million from investors over the claims, with Theranos valued at $9billion at one point.

However, the company collapsed after an investigation by the Wall Street Journal revealed that the machines never functioned properly, with patients given inaccurate results and readings.

The story was the focus of Hulu miniseries The Dropout, with Elizabeth Marvel, Alan Ruck, Naveen Andrews and Stephen Fry also among the cast.

Holmes and Balwani were charged with fraud by the Securities and Exchange Committee (SEC), amid allegations that they lied to investors and patients.

Balwani was sentenced to 13 years in prison after he was found guilty on six counts of defrauding investors and four counts of defrauding patients in a separate trial.

Holmes, who has continually appealed her sentence, surrendered to prison earlier today, and is at the same facility that Real Housewives of Salt Lake City star Jen Shah is serving a term for fraud and money laundering.
