Amy poehler credits Tom Cruise for helping her discover 1 of her biggest turnoffs
Tom Cruise gave Amy Poehler the ick before she even knew what that meant.
On Monday’s episode of Poehler’s podcast, “Good Hang,” the “Saturday Night Live” alum and her guest, actor and singer Reneé Rapp, discussed things men do that completely turn them off — and Poehler admitted that flexible men twist her stomach into knots.
“I don’t like men doing the splits,” Poehler said very seriously. “I don’t find that attractive.”
When Rapp confessed that she finds men doing flips pretty cringeworthy, Poehler agreed.
“Any kind of goofy gymnastics,” Poehler said with a grimace, before quickly citing Cruise in 1983’s “The Outsiders” as an example.

“I remember being like, ‘He’s cool!’ And then he does a backflip in it, and I was like, ‘Mm, no,’” Poehler admitted. “I was like, ‘He lost it for me.’”

Cruise played Steve Randle in the Francis Ford Coppola film, and, for some reason, his character does random flips — both front and back, and usually off a car — for reasons that no one quite understands.
But Cruise’s “Outsiders” castmate — and Poehler’s former “Parks and Recreation” co-star — Rob Lowe revealed in 2020 why he thinks Cruise did random flips in the movie.
Lowe explained on Dax Shepard’s podcast “Armchair Expert” that although “The Outsiders” was one of Cruise’s first films, the then-little-known actor was already displaying diva-like behavior and was “relentlessly competitive.”

Lowe went on to explain that during the filming of “The Outsiders,” Coppola “had a lot of ideas that I don’t know what was going on.” One of Coppola’s seemingly nonsensical ideas included all the young actors learning how to do a backflip, which Lowe described as “really scary” and “hard as fuck to learn.”

But thanks to Cruise’s ruthless drive, he was the only one in the cast who actually mastered the skill.
“[His backflip] is in the movie ‘The Outsiders’ for no reason,” Lowe said. “He runs out of the house and does a backflip for no reason, just to do it.”
