Anwar: Passing of Gig Workers Bill a victory and gift
KUALA LUMPUR: The passing of the Gig Workers Bill in the Dewan Rakyat is a victory and a gift for workers, in line with the spirit of National Day, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In a social media post, he said the Bill marks not only the government's willingness to listen, but also its commitment to implement solutions to the issues raised by gig workers.
"This is a victory for gig workers, in line with the spirit of independence we are celebrating - freeing them from pressure and addressing their demands, which we had promised to fulfil.
"Although the legislative process was complex and faced objections, I am grateful that the concerns of gig workers, including e-hailing drivers, food delivery riders and those on digital platforms, have not only been heard but are now being acted upon.

"Of course, some quarters continue to distort the matter, portraying it as though there are no benefits.
"But believe me, compared to the current situation, the inclusion of social security, leave entitlements, Perkeso contributions and insurance protection is something never before considered by those who remain doubtful or opposed," he said.
Anwar added that the Bill assures income stability, dignity, recognition and, ultimately, greater security and comfort for gig workers and their families.
He also expressed appreciation to Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, the ministry, his colleagues, and government parties who strongly supported and helped realise the aspirations of the people, particularly gig workers.
On Thursday, the Bill, which will grant over 1.2 million gig workers the right to negotiate wages and working conditions, was passed by the Dewan Rakyat via voice vote.
The legislation focuses on four main pillars: a clear statutory definition of gig workers, the right to participate in income-related negotiations, mechanisms for dispute resolution, and social protection.
