Anwar speaks to Thai, Cambodian leaders amid rising border tensions

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Cambodia and Thailand to immediately cease hostilities along their shared border, amid escalating tensions between the two neighbouring Asean nations.

In separate conversations held this evening with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, Anwar conveyed Malaysia's deep concern over the situation and called for calm.

Speaking in Malaysia's capacity as Asean chair for 2025, Anwar appealed directly to both leaders to halt any further aggression and make room for dialogue and a diplomatic resolution.

"I welcome the positive signals and willingness shown by both Bangkok and Phnom Penh to consider this path forward. Malaysia stands ready to assist and facilitate this process in the spirit of Asean unity and shared responsibility," he said in a Facebook post.

Anwar said that Asean's strength lies in its solidarity, and that peace must remain the region's collective and unwavering choice.
