Ariana Grande Mourns Death of Beloved Grandma Marjorie “Nonna” Grande
Ariana Grande is mourning the loss of one of her most beloved family members.
The “Eternal Sunshine” singer’s maternal grandmother Majorie “Nonna” Grande died in her Florida home, Ariana’s mom Joan Grande confirmed on social media. She was 99.
“We are devastated to share that the beloved matriarch of our family has passed away,” the statement, which Ariana reshared to her own Instagram Story June 17, read. “Marjorie (Nonna) Grande passed peacefully in her home and was surrounded by her family and loved ones for every moment of the last few weeks.”
And the statement on behalf of the family—which also includes Ariana’s 42-year-old brother Frankie Grande—concluded, “We thank you for your love, support and for respecting our privacy as we grieve and celebrate her beautiful, extraordinary life.”
Throughout her career, Ariana has spoken fondly of her bond with her grandmother—who even her fans call the Italian nickname “Nonna.” Most recently, she gushed over getting to take her grandmother to see Wicked in her hometown in Boca Raton, Florida.
“It was just so surreal to sit with her in the movie theater I had grown up going to,” Ariana explained during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in December. “To hold her hand—oh my God I’m getting emotional.”
In addition to her grandmother supporting her acting career, Ariana’s nonna also gave her support in her music endeavors—quite literally. Nonna is featured on several of the Grammy winner’s songs, including “Bloodline” off of Thank U Next and Eternal Sunshine’s “ordinary things,” which earned the 99-year-old a seat on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Celebrating the one and only, most beautiful Nonna who has now made history for being the senior most person to ever appear on the @billboard Hot100,” Ariana gushed of the historic feat in an April 2024 Instagram post. “We love and thank you.”
From Ariana’s very first gig in local theater playing the lead in Annie in 2002, her nonna was her biggest fan.
“I said you know, Ariana could do that,” she explained to Today in 2014 of seeing Ariana’s talent from a young age. “She became the star. She auditioned and she became Annie."
