Arif set for timely return as JDT gear up for crucial run-in
PETALING JAYA: Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) have received a timely boost with the return of star winger Arif Aiman Hanapi as they head into the final stretch of the season.
The 24-year-old could feature in the semi-final first leg against Thai champions Buriram United in the Asean Club Championship Shopee Cup at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium today.
Arif hinted at his comeback on social media after completing several weeks of rehabilitation with fitness trainers and a physiotherapist.
“Just stronger, wiser and more grateful. Alhamdulillah, football soon,” he posted.
Arif’s return comes at a crucial juncture for the Southern Tigers, who are aiming to close out their domestic campaign strongly as they eye two more trophies - the Malaysia Cup and the Asean Club Championship.
Having already secured a remarkable 12th straight league title, JDT will wrap up their league campaign against Kelantan at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium on May 10.
They will then turn their attention to the Malaysia Cup final against Kuching City at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on May 23.
JDT coach Xisco Munoz emphasised the importance of momentum and mentality heading into today’s clash against Buriram.
“We must understand that this match is a very important battle. For us, it is like a final. We are playing at home and we need to create a strong atmosphere. Our supporters always give us an extra push in big matches, and we must respond,” he said.
Reflecting on their recent record against Buriram, Munoz acknowledged past difficulties but believes his side have evolved.
“In previous meetings, we did not manage to win, but at that time we were still in the process of building the team, with many new players and staff,” he said.
“Now, after nine months of working together, we understand each other better and know what is required.”
