BMW driver, 56, in 2024 Sims Ave hit-&-run gets 4 months' jail, went to JB for shopping before turning self in
In the days after running a red light along Sims Avenue and knocking over a motorcyclist, a 56-year-old Singaporean woman went about her routine, including going to Johor Bahru for shopping.
She only turned herself in to the police a few days later.
The woman, Huang Su Hua (transliteration), was sentenced to four months' jail and her driver's license has been suspended for five years, Shin Min Daily News reported.
The motorcyclist suffered multiple fractures and spent at least three months on medical leave.
Huang faced four charges in total, including dangerous driving causing hurt, failing to turn herself in to the police within 24 hours after an accident and failing to remain at the scene of the accident.
She pleaded guilty to three of the charges, with the remaining charge taken into consideration during sentencing.
Citing court documents, Shin Min reported that the incident took place on Nov. 19, 2024, at around 8:24am.
Huang was driving her BMW along Sims Avenue when she ran a red light.
Her car collided with a 58-year-old motorcyclist, causing serious injuries to the motorcyclist.
Huang did not stop to render assistance, but instead left the scene.
Huang later drove to meet a colleague and asked the colleague to drive her back to the scene.
However, the motorcyclist had already been conveyed to the hospital.
Afterwards, Huang went about her routine.
She helped open her daughter's music school and got the vehicle repaired.
She was also accused of going to Johor Bahru for a shopping trip.
She turned herself in a few days later at a police station.
The court heard that the motorcyclist suffered multiple fractures and spent at least three months on medical leave.
Huang's lawyer told the court that Huang regretted her actions and had not tried to shift the blame, according to Shin Min.
The lawyer also appealed to the judge to consider her family's circumstances and sought leniency.
Huang, who was accompanied by her daughter in court, also asked the judge for leniency.
Tearing, Huang said she did not mean to hit anyone.
She told the court that she was deeply regretful after the accident.
She shared that she was a single mother and had a son who was still in school.
Huang also shared that she was taking care of an 80-year-old mother who suffered from chronic diseases, such as diabetes.
Huang told the court that she had lost her job following the accident, which had resulted in financial pressure.
She also said that the car was borrowed from a friend, and she had to make compensation after the car was impounded.
In response, the judge asked Huang that the punishment would be even harsher if she were facing charges for intentionally causing harm to others.
"You need to understand that this is all your own doing," the judge said, according to Shin Min.
