KUALA LUMPUR: Barisan Nasional is still committed to defending the unity government and maintaining the country's stability as previously promised, says the coalition’s secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

He said that although Umno and Barisan may want an earlier election, it does not mean “we are overconfident that we will win and form the government”.

“(Deputy Prime Minister and Barisan chairman) Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has also stressed many times that this country needs to remain stable and he has made a clear commitment,” he said after launching the Asia Pacific University (APU) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Supercomputing Lab powered by NVDIA DGX Sparks on Friday (Sept 4).

“The question of poking holes in the roof (tebuk atap) does not arise at all because we are committed to maintaining this government until the election date is announced," he said, adding that this is Barisan’s stance as one of the partners in the Madani government.

It was reported earlier that Ahmad Zahid had voiced support for an earlier 16th General Election (GE 16).

"In my view, the earlier the general election the better, so we can secure the people's mandate.

"However, if this term runs its full course, we are also prepared to face it," he added.

The current 15th Parliament session is expected to reach its full term on Dec 18, 2027.
