PETALING JAYA: Former singles shuttler Liew Daren and former National Sports Institute staff Jerry Gan have been banned for their involvement in betting respectively.

Daren has been suspended for 12 months while Jerry faces a three-month ban from any related badminton activities.

BWF’s independent hearing panel have found Daren and Jerry for betting on Nov 15. The charge has been published in the world body’s website under hearing panel decisions.

They were investigated for suspicious activities in 2018 and 2021.

A BWF independent hearing panel found that Daren had bet on a badminton tournament in 2018 as a ‘restricted participant” and was also found to have obstructed investigations by failing to provide complete information to the inquiry panel, which found his actions to be in violation of BWF’s judicial procedures.

“Evidence also revealed several years of involvement in these illegal activities from phone records, financial documents and chats,” said the report.

“Neither of these individuals appealed the independent hearing panel’s decision. The decision is therefore final.”

Daren had represented Malaysia under Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), as a professional and later as a coach with Team LZJ. He had featured in most of the country’s major tournaments before retiring in 2023.

Jerry, a performance analyst employed by the NSI who was accredited by the BWF to attend international badminton tournaments in support of athletes representing BAM.

All interviews were conducted by the BWF Head of Integrity, Mr. Andy Hines-Randle, and BWF investigator, Mr. Paul Scotney.

In 2018 professionals Zulfadli Zulkifli and Tan Chun Seang were banned for 20 and 15 years respectively for match-fixing.
