Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel hit a defiant 90 before England bowled out India for 307 to lead by 46 runs on day three of the fourth Test in Ranchi on Sunday.

Shoaib Bashir took one wicket in the morning session to complete his first five-wicket haul in Tests.

Fellow spinner Tom Hartley bowled Jurel to wrap up the innings on the stroke of lunch.

Resuming at 219-7 on Sunday morning, Jurel extended the eighth-wicket partnership with Kuldeep Yadav to 76 to frustrate England, who made 353 in their first innings.

James Anderson broke the stand when Kuldeep, on 28, played on to give the veteran seamer his 698th Test wicket.

The 41-year-old is now two victims away from becoming just the third bowler to take 700 wickets in Tests, after Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and the late Australian great Shane Warne (708).

Jurel, who made his debut in the third Test in Rajkot, hit six fours and four sixes in his 149-ball stay and picked up his maiden Test half-century.

The 23-year-old is the latest talented new player to shine for India in the absence of the experienced Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

The 22-year-old opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made 73 on Saturday, tops the series batting with 618 runs including two double centuries.

Bashir, 20, who missed England's win in the first Test due to a visa issue, trapped debutant Akash Deep lbw for his fifth wicket and kissed the ground in celebration.

Left-arm spinner Hartley finished with three wickets on a pitch with large cracks and showing variable bounce.

England are 2-1 down and need a win to take the five-match series to a deciding fifth Test in Dharamsala.
