PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun need to win the mental battle against England’s Ben Lane-Sean Vendy to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in the World Championships.

Men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has warned his charges not to be rattled by the English duo’s on-court mind games.

Lane-Vendy are known to intimidate opponents on court and Herry has urged Wei Chong-Kai Wun to maintain cool heads in what is set to be a fiery battle in the third round in Paris.

The world No. 7 pair struggled to control their emotions during a closely fought second round match against French brothers Toma Junior Popov-Christo Popov and were staring at defeat when they trailed 11-16 in the third game at the Adidas Arena in Port de la Chapelle in Paris on Tuesday.

After some calm words of advice from the experienced Herry though Wei Chong-Kai Wun found their rhythm just in time to pull off a great comeback and come away with a 21-15, 13-21, 21-19 victory in 65 minutes.

The Indonesian said that the pair’s rhythm was disrupted and they could not play their normal game after their service was faulted a few times.

“Wei Chong-Kai Wun did not play their normal game yesterday (Tuesday). Wei Chong, especially made many mistakes in the second and third games,” said Herry.

“They were disrupted a bit after Kai Wun’s service was faulted four times. I told them to follow the game plan and to be calmer. Don’t rush to kill the shots.”

After surviving the huge scare, Herry hopes Wei Chong-Kai Wun have learnt the lessons from the match and would stay calm against Lane-Vendy.

“Against Lane-Vendy, Wei Chong-Kai Wun need to focus 100 per cent and play calmly,” said Herry.

Lane-Vendy, who are currently ranked No. 14 in the world, have showed they can be a big threat when they stunned another Malaysian pair, world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games semi-finals.

Lane is especially looking in fine form after going through a surgery in June.

For Wei Chong-Kai Wun, this will be their first meeting against the Englishmen.
