27 May - Bi Gan has won the Special Award (Prix Special) in the Cannes Film Festival Main Competition for his film, "Resurrection".
The film's victory marks the first time in a decade that a Chinese film has won an award at the festival's main competition since Hou Hsiao-hsien's "The Assassin", which coincidentally stars the same actress, Shu Qi.
Said Bi Gan when accepting the award, "I would like to thank the Cannes Film Festival, the judges, and all the people who have silently contributed behind the scenes of the film."
The organisers stated that "Resurrection" showcases the continued evolution of Bi's creativity, while staying true to the sensory and poetic qualities that define his unique cinematic style.
At the press conference after the event, Bi Gan added that the idea of making this film was simple. He felt that the world had changed a lot, and it was his wish to have a movie to comfort everyone.
Starring Jackson Yee, Shu Qi and Mark Chao among others, the film revolves around a woman who discovers that she is still able to experience dreams in a future where most of humanity have lost such capacity.
It is expected to be theatrically released in China in the second half of 2025 or by early 2026.
