Brian Wilson, Beach Boys Cofounder, Dead at 82
The Beach Boys is mourning a major loss.
Brian Wilson, who co-created the group in 1961 alongside younger brothers Dennis Wilson and Carl Wilson, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, has died after battling a neurocognitive disorder, his family shared on social media June 11. He was 82.
"We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away," Brian’s family wrote on his Instagram page. "We are at a loss for words right now."
Brian was the father to seven children: Carnie, 57, and Wendy, 55, whom he shared with ex-wife Marilyn Wilson, and Dakota, Daria, Delanie, Dylan and Dash, whom he adopted with his late wife Melinda Ledbetter, who passed in 2024.
"Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving," they continued before acknowledging their father's loyal fanbase, saying, "We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world."
Concluding their post, the family nodded to the title of Brian's 1988 hit from his first solo album, adding, "Love & Mercy."
Brian and his bandmates, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, had over 80 songs chart worldwide, with four on the Billboard Hot 100. The music legend served as the group's songwriter and co-lead vocalist, also playing bass guitar and keyboard. While he struggled with his mental health throughout his career, he released several solo projects and toured until playing his last show in 2022.
He also passed on his musical talents to his daughtersCarnie and Wendy, who formed the group Wilson Phillips in 1989 alongside Chynna Phillips, the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas.
After the passing of his wife in January 2024, Brian was placed under the conservatorship of two of his longtime representatives due to a "major neurocognitive disorder" that made him "unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter," according to a doctor's declaration at the time, per the Associated Press. It was not disclosed how long he had been struggling for.
Prior to the announcement of his conservatorship, the Los Angeles native spoke out regarding his grief in the wake of Melinda's passing, calling her the "anchor" of their family.
"My heart is broken," Wilson wrote on Instagram at the time. "Melinda was more than my wife. She was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career. She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart."
