Bye Bye Labubu, Hello Fuggler? Chinese Netizens Have A Love-Hate Relationship With New Ugly Viral Doll
The Labubu doll was easily one of the biggest trends of 2024.
Almost everybody had one strapped onto their bags after Blackpink's Lisa sparked a worldwide craze over the Pop Mart toy. There are also people like Taiwanese star Jiro Wang who's still slamming scalpers for leaving him with no Labubus to buy.
But the time to say goodbye to the sharp toothed-elf with bunny-like ears may have come sooner than we thought.
Recently, a new doll has taken Chinese social media Xiaohongshu by storm. Meet the Fuggler.
Netizens have dubbed it "Labubu's opponent". Some even proclaimed that "Labubu's competitor has finally arrived".
A Fuggler, also known as "funny-ugly monsters", is a freakish-looking doll that has human-like teeth. Yes, it looks even creepier than Labubu's impish grin.
They come it various colours and forms, and was created by British artist and author Louise McGettrick in 2010.
At that time, Louise had come across a set of dentures on eBay and decided to sew them onto her own teddy bears. She then began selling them on Etsy and they quickly blew up online, even attracting attention from media outlets such as Fox News.
Now, it's flooding news sites and stores in China too, with people chirping that they adore the doll precisely "because it's so ugly".
Many Chinese netizens, however, still prefer Labubu. For now.
"At least people can see a hint of cuteness in the Labubu. This one purely freaks me out," complained one netizen. Another ranted: "Labubu is ugly-cute. This one is straight up ugly."
One also questioned: "What's happening with the world?", while another scoffed that the world is now "just a huge competition to see who's the ugliest".
But we shall wait and see if these people still end up jumping on the Fuggler bandwagon when it officially becomes the next big thing?
