Like any relationship, Sarah Jessica Parker‘s Carrie and John Corbett’s Aidan have been through a lot over the years. But will they make it work?

With season 3 of And Just Like That… officially here, fans of the show are more curious than ever about how Carrie and Aidan’s story will continue. After all, while the reboot series showed their long-awaited reunion in season 2, they’re certainly on some shaky ground right now.

“It’s complicated with Aidan,” Carrie explains to Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) in the season 3 trailer. “But I’m trying to figure it out.”

Before we watch the two of them figure themselves out once again, join us on a walk down memory lane of their relationship. From their adorable first meeting to their 5-year pact, jog your memory of their ups and downs below.

Carrie & Aidan’s Full Relationship Timeline:

Carrie & Aidan Instantly Connected

By the time Carrie and Aidan met in season 3, episode 5, of Sex and the City, titled “No Ifs, Ands, or Butts,” Carrie had split from her ex, Big (Chris Noth), and was trying to get back out in the dating pool. That’s when her friend Stanford (Willie Garson) tells her about Aidan, a furniture designer, and takes her to attend his furniture expo.

“His name was Aidan Shaw, he was warm, masculine and classic American – just like his furniture,” Carrie’s voice-over says when she sees him for the first time.

But when Carrie goes to approach him, Aidan’s dog Scout comes running and jumps her. “You should get him a chew toy or something,” she jokes after Aidan frees her from the dog. “Look, to his credit, he only picks the best-looking ladies,” Aidan says back. Pretty smooth, right?

“I’m Aidan,” he says, to which Carrie replies, “I’m humiliated.”

They walk around the store, and Carrie says she’s interested in buying one of his chairs. “Cool, I just got a couple questions,” he says. “Where do you want it delivered, and can I take you out to dinner sometime?”

Carrie & Aidan Took It Slow at First

After their sweet meet-cute, Carrie and Aidan start dating, and things seem to be going smoothly. Aidan admits that he didn’t date smokers, and Carrie decides to quit smoking to be with him. He then takes the relationship slowly, physically, and Carrie, despite it being in uncharted territory, takes it in stride.

Sadly, however, Carrie is still struggling with her lingering feelings for Big. When Aidan one day asks her to meet his parents, she panics and pushes him away. He’s patient and gives her space, and she soon comes to her senses and shows up to meet his parents, and they’re back on solid ground.

Carrie Couldn’t Fight Her Feelings for Big

While their relationship seemed to be going well, Carrie bumps into Big, and they soon confide in each other. For the first time, Big talks about how unhappy he is in his marriage to Natasha (Bridget Moynahan).

In episode 9 of the season, titled “Easy Come, Easy Go,” they begin their affair (and Carrie starts smoking again).

Carrie Confessed to Aidan

After Natasha catches Carrie and Big together in their home together, Carrie decides to come clean about the affair to Aidan. He mulls it over at first and ends up breaking up with her at Charlotte’s (Kristin Davis) wedding.

“I just know myself,” he says in their breakup. “This isn’t the type of thing that I can get over. I just need to be on my own for a while.”

Carrie & Aidan Gave It Another Try

In season 4, Carrie and Aidan reunite because he’s going into business with Steve (David Eigenberg), and Carrie admits she still has feelings. “I miss you, and I’ve missed you,” Carrie says on his stoop. “You broke my heart!” Aidan responds.

Despite knowing better, Aidan goes back to Carrie that night and they start dating again.

In season 4, episode 12, titled “Just Say Yes,” Aidan proposes to Carrie. “I love you, Carrie, there’s no one I could love more,” Aidan says down on one knee. “I want to live my life with you, what do you think?” “Yes,” Carrie says.

He then moves into her apartment and helps buy the neighboring one for a full expansion.

Aidan Asked to Elope, But It Didn’t End Well

By the end of the season, Aidan and Carrie attend a black-tie event and Aidan proposes a Vegas elopement during their walk home.

“This isn’t about you, I’m not ready for marriage,” Carrie says. “Well I am,” he says. “I’m sorry if that scares you but I am. People they fall in love and they get married, that’s what they do.”

As they talk, Carrie realizes that he wants to marry her because he still doesn’t trust her after her affair with Big. “I love you but I can’t marry you to make you trust me,” Carrie says. “If you don’t want to marry me right now, you’ll never want to marry me.” So there you have it, another breakup on the books.

Carrie & Aidan Saw Each Other Again in Season 6

A few seasons later, in the first episode of season 6, while fleeing from a date, Carrie runs into Aidan. But as he turns around in a dramatic slow-mo, Aidan is carrying a baby trapped to his chest. As it turns out, it’s his son, Tate, whom he shared with his wife, Kathy. Aidan and Carrie are cordial, but it’s clear no friendship will really come of it.

“There is the type of the date you can’t wait to keep and the type of date you both know you will never keep,” Carrie says in a voice-over.

Carrie & Aiden Reunited in Abu Dhabi

Carrie and Aidan’s story continued in the Sex and the City film franchise. In Sex and the City 2, where Carrie and the girls travel to Abu Dhabi for a luxurious trip, Carrie coincidentally runs into Aidan at a spice market. “This is the best mirage that I’ve ever had,” Aidan says.

At that point, Carrie is having some marital issues with Big back home and agrees to have dinner with Aidan. The two kiss at the end of their date, but Carrie and Big reconcile by the end of the movie.

Carrie & Aidan Rekindled Their Romance 13 Years Later

Years after their kiss in Abu Dhabi, Carrie reaches out to Aidan over email in the second season of And Just Like That… After exchanging emails back and forth, they set a dinner date for, coincidentally, Valentine’s Day.

During their date, their chemistry comes back in full force and Carrie ends up inviting him to her apartment. However, before they can take things a step further, Aidan says he can’t go up to her place. It has too many memories for him. Despite the situation, Aidan kisses her outside on her steps, and they spend the night at a hotel.

Carrie Bought a New Place, Aidan Backed Out

After seasons in her iconic apartment, Carrie says goodbye to her longtime home and buys a massive apartment in Gramercy Park so that she and Aidan can live there together. Sadly, right after Carrie moves in in the season 2 finale, Aidan comes over and reveals that he can’t leave Virginia.

As it turns out, his 14-year-old son Wyatt is having a hard time at school, and Aidan needs to stay there to help. He then proposes a plan to Carrie: that he’ll move in when Wyatt is out of his teens. Carrie takes it well, and Aidan leaves the next morning.

“No matter what happens… this was not a mistake,” Carrie says as they say goodbye, per TVLine.

So there you have it, Carrie and Aidan’s full timeline; from the moment they met to the interesting agreement they decided on by the end of AJLT season 2. What will happen in season 3? We’ll have to tune in and see!
