Casualty crowned Best Soap ahead of Coronation Street and Holby City by RTS Awards

Casualty has been crowned the Best Soap at the RTS Awards this evening, with judges branding it the champion among fellow nominees Coronation Street and Holby City.

Previously, it was confirmed that rival soaps EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks had failed to make the shortlist.

Casualty returned earlier this year with a special pandemic episode which was widely praised by fans and critics alike for its reality and its filming techniques given the filming restrictions.

Other storylines have focused on the death of Duffy and upcoming drama will see Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing) exit in upcoming scenes.

Coronation Street has won acclaim for the hard hitting coercive abuse storyline involving Geoff and Yasmeen while Holby also pulled off an impressive coronavirus special while also waving goodbye to iconic characters like Jac and Ric.

Announcing the result, the Royal Television Society’s Twitter account said: ‘Casualty wins the Soap and Continuing Drama award for “still innovating, still pioneering in using new technology, and still pushing forward what this type of show can do and say” – well done to the team!’

Casualty celebrated the victory by simply tweeting ‘WE WON AN RTS AWARD!’
