Changi Airport’s Carpets Sparked A Debate Online

One tourist recently brought to attention a feature of Changi Airport that we may have taken for granted, even if we travel often. Yes, we're talking about the airport's carpeted flooring.

One tourist recently noticed the plush carpets at Changi Airport, and shared it on Xiaohongshu, and simply captioned it: "Changi Airport is carpeted."

Little did she know the innocuous post would spark off hundreds of comments from netizens.

Majority said the carpeted floors made the airport look "aesthetic" and “luxurious”. Several others chimed in that "this country is really beautiful,” and “[Changi Airport] is the most comfortable airport I’ve ever been to”.

Some even shared photos of other passengers taking naps on the ground to prove how cosy the transit terminals are.

That said, a handful of netizens also had a couple of gripes with the flooring choice.

Some were concerned about bugs and germs — though we’re certain the carpeted floors are cleaned very regularly. Others complained about how “difficult it is to wheel luggages on carpeted flooring”.

“I get so tired dragging my luggage around in transit, the only solution is to use the push carts provided,” wrote one netizen, while another ranted: “The carpets are not friendly to those with heavy luggages at all."

When one commenter asked if the carpets are “smelly and dirty”, they received replies on how “ridiculously clean” Singapore - airport included, is “without a single cigarette butt in sight”.

There’s actually a good reason as to why the transit floors are all carpeted.

The carpets absorb noise, including those of hurried footsteps and the incessant click-clack of luggage wheels. It also reduces fatigue on the passenger’s feet, and provides an overall more pleasant experience while travelling. Similar as to why many hotel rooms are carpeted — it also gives the space a more luxurious and posh look.
