A routine test carried out on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl nuclear power station resulted in the detonation of the plant’s nuclear reactor. The ensuing disaster saw a massive ejection of nuclear matter into the atmosphere above Ukraine and over most of Europe. The material released into the plant’s nearby surroundings resulted in more than 200 deaths, and the effects are still visible today.
