A battery gigafactory in Arnstadt, Thuringia, backed by Chinese investment, symbolizes collaboration between Europe and China in green energy.
Operated by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), the facility began operations in late 2022, representing a €1.8 billion (US$1.96 billion) investment.
The plant produces 30 million battery cells annually. This output is sufficient for up to 200,000 electric vehicles each year.
It supports European automakers in meeting decarbonization targets amid regulatory and market pressures.
Initially, engineers and technicians from China were sent to stabilize operations and train local staff.
Now, a primarily European workforce manages the facility, highlighting cross-cultural cooperation in daily operations.
The factory operates with net-zero carbon emissions, using green electricity, electrified logistics, and smart energy systems.
It collaborates with Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute on projects related to battery durability and resource efficiency.
The site has also created over 1,000 local jobs and contributed to regional infrastructure development.
The Arnstadt plant is part of a trend of Chinese battery manufacturers investing in Europe.
CATL is constructing additional facilities in Hungary and Spain, while other Chinese firms are expanding in Slovakia and Hungary. These efforts aim to localize supply chains and support Europe’s transition to electric mobility.
Experts note the strategic complementarity between Chinese advancements in battery production and European strengths in automotive design.
