Country Singer Spencer Hatcher’s Mom Stabbed to Death During Home Invasion
Spencer Hatcher is grieving an unfathomable loss.
The country singer’s mother, Holly Hatcher, was killed Aug. 3 by an armed intruder during a home invasion in Virginia, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a joint video statement with the Hatcher family. She was 62.
The intruder—later identified by police as 41-year-old Kevin Walker—entered the home and fatally stabbed Holly, a local schoolteacher, before attacking her husband Michael Hatcher, according to Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson. During the altercation, Michael, 65, was able to retrieve a handgun from his car and fire a single shot at Walker, killing the attacker.
When police responded to an emergency call and arrived on the scene, they discovered Michael “suffering from visible injury” that he sustained from the altercation.
“There's no way for you to know the trauma and the pain and the unanswered questions that I have had [and] that my three sons, Dane, Spencer and Connor have had,” Michael said in the Aug. 7 video statement while sporting a bandage on his right forearm. “Each of you have made it much more bearable through your outpouring of love and your caring and your kindness and support to all of us, and for that, I thank you so much.”
Authorities confirmed that no charges would be filed in the case due to the suspect’s death.
“This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind,” Hutcheson said. “With 31 years in law enforcement for me, I have never seen anything like it in my entire career.”
E! News has reached out to Spencer’s rep for comment but has not heard back.
Following the tragedy, Spencer, 28, announced he would be postponing three planned concert dates while he deals with “a monumental loss in our family.”
“I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones,” he wrote in a post on Instagram Aug. 5. “We ask that everyone please respect our family's privacy at this time.”

Regardless of the reason for their alterations, nothing justified such aggressive behaviour by the 41-year-old suspect. At the end of the day, violence will not solve anything and will only make things worse.
