Cut Cost? M'sia Shopping Mall Combines Christmas & Chinese New Year Decor
8 DAYS·2024-12-23 22:01
You know that feeling when you walk into a mall right after Christmas and you already hear Chinese New Year songs playing?
We thought that was considered high efficiency until we saw what this mall in Sabah recently did.
According to a Facebook page, Urban Sabah, if you were to visit Suria Sabah, a shopping centre in Kota Kinabalu, you can experience Christmas and CNY all at once.
No, we're not kidding.
The two-in-one experience starts immediately at entrance, where one is greeted by not just Santa Claus, but also Cai Shen Ye, aka the Chinese God of Fortune.
The space next to Santa is filled with Christmas decor, such as presents, a snowman and Xmas baubles, while Cai Shen Ye is flanked by gold coins, red lanterns and a wall with the Chinese word for "fortune" pasted on it.
It doesn't just end there.
In the mall's atrium is a huge stage with a snowman, two reindeers and two Christmas trees on it.
Finally sounds on brand for Christmas right?
Sure, until you look up.
One side of the ceiling has Christmas lights hanging from it, while the other, red, oriental lanterns.
As hilarious and confusing as it all sounds, netizens think it's the mall's attempt to save cost.
"Budget, do together," laughed one such netizen, while another called it "cost effective".
Well, whatever it is, looks like Santa's going to huat next year!

Maybe cost cutting maybe not for displaying Christmas and CNY decorations altogether. But one thing is definitely sure, i.e. the shopping malls want the customers to buy everything that is on display. The ideal situation is for the shoppers to buy loads of items including the decorations all under one roof. In Singapore, cutting down time and public transport fees will be pluses for our shoppers too.
