In the HBO rebootAnd Just Like That, Cynthia Nixon‘s character Miranda has been one of the most controversial. After all, not only did fans love Miranda’s longtime husband Steve (David Eigenberg), but many just couldn’t get behind Miranda leaving her husband to be with non-binary comedian Che Diaz (Sara Ramírez).

But now that Che and Miranda are over (their characters went their separate ways at the end of season 2), Nixon is getting real about how she felt about Miranda’s journey, and teasing what’s to come in season 3 (which is premiering on May 29).

In an interview with Grazia, Nixon first called out fans who jumped on the “poor Steve” narrative. “Our show always killed its darlings,” she said. “If we’re just gonna play it safe and nice, why are you watching?”

Not only that, but Nixon thinks fans might’ve judged Che too harshly. “I love Che, I love Sara,” Nixon said of her former co-star, who will not be returningfor season 3. “It’s hard to know what people would have made of Che if Che hadn’t ostensibly broken up Steve and Miranda.”

“But I don’t want a show in which everybody is behaving well all the time,” she explained. “A feminist show doesn’t show women being perfect.’

Nixon then explained what she meant by calling AJLT, and the original Sex and the City series, a “feminist show.” “What you have to remember is that we were in our thirties and forties,” she said. “Of course, I look at the show now, we look like babies, but being single at that age, at that time, still had a kind of stigma.”

She then reiterated the central message of the shows. “You can be a woman, you can have a lot of sex with a lot of different people,” she said. “It didn’t make you a s– and it didn’t mean you were using sex to get something. You were having sex – because you enjoyed having sex!”

So what’s to come for Nixon’s character Miranda in season 3? Single life! “Both the old show and the new show are more fun when people are dating, so Miranda will be dating,” she said.

In the trailer, Miranda talks about having a crush on her coworker, played by actress Dolly Wells. “I really like her, but it’s a work contact,” she said. We can’t wait to see what’s to come!
