Dead juvenile monkey found trapped in fishing net at Pulau Ubin

A dead monkey was recently found suspended in a fishing net high up in a tree on Pulau Ubin.

On Sunday (7 Sept), a user took to the Singapore Wildlife Sightings Facebook group to share photos of the animal suspended from a tree.

In the post, the original poster (OP) shared that the tree was located close to Ah Ma Drink Stall — a well-known landmark on the island.

Noticing a foul smell and flies swarming around the animal, the OP concluded that it was dead.

The OP also recalled seeing litter near the tree — including abandoned finishing lines, hooks, and nets — which they believe had been left behind by anglers.

Netizens speculate how monkey found itself in the situation

The post drew concerned responses from netizens, many of whom questioned how the net could have ended up so high in the tree.

An angler commented that it was unlikely for someone to cast an entire net onto a tree.

Another user suggested that a monkey might have brought the net up the tree, before another got caught in it.

NParks urges public to fish responsibly

In response to MS News‘ queries, a National Parks Board (NParks) spokesperson said the agency is aware of the incident involving a juvenile long-tailed macaque.

The carcass was cleared on Monday (8 Sept) morning, and no foul play was suspected.

NParks also reminded the public to fish only at designated spots, and to do so sustainably and responsibly.

“At designated fishing sites on Pulau Ubin, NParks encourages anglers to dispose of used fishing lines, old hooks and bait into litter bins after use,” said the spokesperson.
