Detective Chinatown 3 had an incredible opening weekend in China with estimated ticket sales reaching $393 million, a number that not only surpasses Avengers: Endgame's North American opening of $357 million, but sets a record for a single market. As reported by THR and BoxOfficeGuru.com's founder Gitesh Pandya, Detective Chinatown 3 led China's box office over the Lunar New Year alongside the $160 million earned by the time-travel romantic comedy Hi, Mom.These early projections were given by ticketing app Maoyan and show that, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, China's theatrical box office appears to be healthy and booming. It's also important to note that Detective Chinatown 3 was one of the many films delayed due to the pandemic.Maoyan also projects that Detective Chinatown 3 will conclude its run at $865 million, which would earn it the title of China's second-biggest blockbuster film ever, slightly missing out on dethroning 2017's Wolf Warrior's $874 million.Hi, Mom may have actually end up being one of the reasons Detective Chinatown 3 will fail to surpass Wolf Warrior 2, as "word of mouth for the comedy turned tepid" and Hi, Mom saw its share of daily earnings jump from 17.2% on Friday to 31% on Sunday, while Detective Chinatown 3 fell from 60% to 50%.Detective Chinatown 3 was shot entirely on IMAX cameras earned $23.5 million in Chinese IMAX theaters, making it the biggest opening weekend ever for a Chinese IMAX film.Have a tip for us?
