Actor Devin Harjes, best known for roles on “Boardwalk Empire” and “Manifest” among other TV series, died on May 27, after being hospitalized at New York’s Mount Sinai West Hospital. He was 41.

Harjes’s death was announced Sunday in an obituary posted to his official website. The actor’s representative, David Williams, confirmed to CBS News and other outlets that Harjes had been diagnosed with cancer last winter, but did not provide specifics.

“He was an artist of great conviction who never gave less than one hundred percent to any role he undertook,” Williams said in a statement, per USA Today. “As a person, he was generous, kind, understanding and devoted to his family and friends, a great horseback rider and had a magic way with all animals. He was at home in the backcountry of the Rocky Mountains, the plains of west Texas or the middle of Hell’s Kitchen. He will be missed.”

A native of Lubbock, Texas, Harjes began his career as a stage actor in New York, appearing in off-Broadway productions as well as student films. His big break came in 2011 with a two-episode arc on the HBO period drama “Boardwalk Empire,” in which he portrayed legendary boxer Jack Dempsey.

Director Antonio DiFonzo, who worked with Harjes on the 2012 independent feature “The Boyz of Summer,” paid tribute to the late actor on Friday with a heartfelt post on Facebook.

Describing Harjes as “an amazing actor and friend,” DiFonzo wrote, “He was constantly striving to be better and put his heart and soul into everything he did! We will never forget you and your amazing part in The Boyz of Summer and our lives. Rest in peace, Lion Heart!”

Filmmaker Debra Markowitz echoed those sentiments on Instagram, noting: “So sorry to hear about the passing of [Long Island International Film Expo] alumnus Devin Harjes. Way too young.”
