I disagree on the finding. You work into any place, You can hear most people are speaking Mandarin, yes maybe mix with English. I will say most know how to speak but not able to read nor read. Because of this, Chinese culture and history is Lost.

Chinese Gen X, Y and Z people who cannot speak, write or understand the Chinese language are bloody pitiful. If Chinese people can only speak English and think Chinese is unimportant and can forget about it, they should delete their surnames.

“做人別忘本”, That was what I was starting to learned when I was first enrolled into the school in the '60. It was only after the Independent of Singapore, the "PAPPIES" had started slowly to eliminate learning of mother's tongue and trying made ALL SINKIES to starting worshipping and! trying hard to believe that it's better to acts, behaves and speaks like the WHITES.

'Is the Chinese language still relevant in Singapore (!?)'... I think is a Wrong Question to be asking now! It should be how to get the language to the next level.. In spite of the reluctance (!?) of the current Gen Z to embrace & struggle to master it...
