Dungarees are back in style – here’s how to wear them like a fashion pro
Dungarees are no longer shapeless and functional, but a staple of fashion. You can make yours look even hipper by bearing a couple of tips in mind, from the fit to the clothes you pair with them.
Dungarees were originally designed to protect wearers doing demanding physical labour. Now, they are a fashion fixture.
In 2025, dungarees with a wide silhouette are particularly popular, and most people are wearing them made of denim.
But what should you consider if you are buying a pair and what can you wear with them?
Here are some tips, courtesy of a fashion expert.
When purchasing a pair of dungarees, look for a relaxed fit. You don't want them too tight, especially in the crotch area.
"If in doubt, go for the next size up. Dungarees tend to be worn looser and more relaxed these days anyway," says style consultant Dunja Hess.
It's not just the cut that's important. Another detail people often overlook is the leg length.
Many pairs of dungarees have long legs, which you can shorten or roll up.
Go for the latter as rolling up the hem is a style statement that's in right now, she says.
Sporty and clean
You can't go wrong with this look: dungarees paired with a simple white t-shirt and some retro sneakers. The vintage-inspired styles that are popular right now make this look particularly modern and casual.
Subtle contrasts

For a more feminine look, team your overalls with a lacey blouse, in line with the boho chic trend which is making a comeback.
Tops that have flounce trims or ruffled sleeves make for a cute contrast with your more rugged denim. When it comes to shoes, espadrilles or ballet flats are the perfect match for this look.

Go classic
A simple, classic combination that will never go out of fashion is a pair of dungarees and a polo neck, Hess says.
Black denim works really well in this combination, elevating the look.
A pair of loafers or simple ankle boots complete the ensemble.
Show some skin
Dungarees already have a lot of fabric, so why not wear them with a cropped top or tank top?
You can also add an eye-catching statement necklace for additional wow, while a pair of high heels adds a chic touch to this look.
A hoodie also works well worn under a pair of dungarees.
"It's a surprisingly cohesive look that emphasises the sporty feel of the combination," Hess says.
What to wear over dungarees
To complete your image, you need a matching jacket. However, not all items give you a cohesive look.
"A long cardigan is often not a good choice because it distorts the proportions," Hess says.
Instead, she recommends shorter, boxy jackets to add structure to your outfit.
A leather jacket, for example, adds a cool touch to dungarees.
A denim jacket also works, but should be colour coordinated to avoid an overly monotonous jeans look.
If you prefer something more elegant, opt for a wool coat.

Avoid these styling mistakes
"It's a no-go if the dungarees are too tight, especially around the crotch or the bottom," Hess says.
And wearing them in a business context is also tricky, "unless it's a very creative environment, otherwise dungarees often look out of place."
Meanwhile, away from the office, wearing your dungarees open with one strap unhooked is also on trend. – dpa
