EVs made up 18.4% of newly registered cars in South Korea in August, up to a record high, according to data from auto industry tracker Carisyou.
Out of 126,787 cars registered last month, 23,269 were EVs.
From January to August, EVs accounted for 12.7% of new car registrations.
In 2020, EVs made up 2.4% of new registrations, rising to 9.8% in 2022, but growth had slowed until this recent rise.
The surge was driven by the release of new models from Hyundai Motor, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW.
Cumulative EV sales in South Korea are expected to surpass 200,000 this year.
Between January and August, 141,986 new EVs were registered in the country.
