Soulmates is a word that gets thrown around all too often, but it is certainly fitting for Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) and Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) in EastEnders.

The couple finally tied the knot in January, following Lola's tragic brain tumour diagnosis the previous November, after several years of off and on dating.

However, it is not just Lola and Jay who have formed a strong bond, as actors Danielle and Jamie have 'become much closer' after filming Lola's emotional death scenes.

'Thankfully we’ve always had a great bond,' Jamie revealed.

'When you go through something like this with somebody, you can’t help but get closer to them.

'We went away for the week in Margate, that was great, we were in it together and we were all in it together.'

During Lola and Jay's day trip to Margate, Jay serenaded her with a song from their wedding day, something which Danielle revealed in a behind the scenes video isn't unique to just their characters.

'We are filming on the beach where Jay gets to play his guitar to Lola, which is very special because me and Jamie have this thing where Jamie always plays me the guitar, so it's really nice to have that in the scene.'

Lola's storyline has been a difficult one to film, culminating in some heart breaking scenes as she sadly passed away.

Speaking about filming the final episodes, Jamie explained how it was important to keep the atmosphere on set light.

Devastated Jay misses Lola's final moments as she dies in EastEnders

'It was very tough. It was important to keep it as light as possible. I’m a child and a joker anyway, it was important for me to have a little laugh and a joke, we are very fortunate that we’re not in that position, and it’s important that we recognise that for obvious reasons.

'It was just important to do that so we could go home at the end of the night, know that we had done a good day’s work and know that we have been trying to tell the story as honestly as we can and in the best way that we can.

'For our mental state, it was important that we remember it’s just our work and really important to know that we can close the door on it at the end of the day.'

Danielle also reflected on the atmosphere during the shoot, revealing that it felt very 'respectful'.

'The vibe on set was very, just so respectful, I can’t tell you how respectful it felt, it really was a completely different vibe that I had never felt before. I think it was because everyone on set had been affected by cancer, it just meant so much to everybody that we got it correct.'

Jamie agreed, saying: 'As Danielle said, it was really respectful on set, we had a lovely crew as well and our director, Karl Neilson, he had recently lost his mum I believe, a couple of months before. He was adamant that he felt he knew a way to do this and really wanted to see it through.

'As you can imagine, there was a lot of tears on set as well but happy tears! We got it done.'
