Ellen DeGeneres’ Talk Show Demeanor Toward Female Comedians Raises Eyebrows
It’s been three years since The Ellen DeGeneres Show aired its last episode, but the controversy surrounding Ellen DeGeneres continues.
The 67-year-old comedian is now retired and living in the U.K. with her wife, Portia de Rossi, but she’s still being called out by her peers for her reported less-than-kind behavior on her talk show. The latest celebrity to step up to the plate is comedian Margaret Cho.
On the June 18 episode of The Kelly Mantle Show, Cho described DeGeneres as “really weird” and “not nice” to her for the majority of her career.
“I opened for her in the 1980s, when she was a headliner in comedy clubs. Later, when I would do her talk show in the 2000s, she would act like we just met,” Cho explained. “And I’m like, ‘Bitch, what?’ That’s weird. We go way back. It’s so creepy and weird.”
It may just sound like sour grapes between two performers, but this isn’t the first time DeGeneres has been taken to task by other female comedians. Rosie O’Donnell famously shared with The Hollywood Reporter how they went from a “good relationship” to DeGeneres’ out-of-left-field comment about her on Larry King Live in 1998.
“I don’t know Rosie. We’re not friends,” DeGeneres told the late talk show host.
DeGeneres never invited O’Donnell on her daytime show, and it took until 2023 for her to receive an apology via text.
O’Donnell shared with the media outlet, “She wrote, ‘I’m really sorry and I don’t remember that.’ I guess she saw me talk about it on Andy Cohen’s show [Watch What Happens Live]. I remembered it so well; I had T-shirts printed and I gave them to my staff that said ‘I don’t know Rosie. We’re not friends.’ I have a picture of her holding [my then-infant son] Parker. I know her mother. I could identify her brother without her in the room. I knew her for so many years. It just felt like I don’t trust this person to be in my world.”
If that wasn’t evidence enough of DeGeneres’ alleged problem with other women in her field, Kathy Griffin has been open about her almost 30-year feud with the retired comedian. They got off on the wrong foot when Griffin guest starred on her sitcom, Ellen, in 1996 and their friendship never recovered.
“I have a loathing for her that is epic,” Griffin said on April 1 on her YouTube channel. “I know a lot of it is jealousy. I get it. She’s way more successful than I’ll ever be. You’re welcome, Ellen. That’s way nicer than anything you’ve ever said about me or ever will.”
DeGeneres addressed her reputation in her 2024 Netflix special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval.
“Yeah, the ‘be kind’ girl wasn’t kind, that was the headline,” she said. “Here’s the problem: I’m a comedian who got a talk show and I ended the show every day by saying, ‘Be kind to one another.’ Had I ended my show by saying, ‘Go f—k yourselves,’ people would’ve been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind.”
