Eric Tsang’s ex-wife, Taiwanese actress Wang Meihua, was admitted to hospital on Christmas Eve last year after doctors found a tumour in her lungs during a routine medical check-up. The 63-year-old underwent surgery to remove the cancerous lump on Christmas day, but only told the public about it three days later, when she was discharged.

Eric, 67, was among the people she thanked after the successful operation. But Meihua only shared the full story on a recent episode of talk show Lady Go.

Meihua, who is popularly known as Bao Ma, let on: “I was alone when I was admitted to hospital. I was warded for three days, and I was thankful to everyone who came to visit me. I was also very grateful to my ex-husband, Santa Claus.”

The actress continued, “I was all alone after the surgery and I kept throwing up. I was about to have a panic attack. When Eric called to express his concern, I told him about what was happening. He was on the phone with me because he was afraid that [the surgery] took too big of a toll on me. He kept talking to me so that I wouldn’t think about the nausea.” After they ended the call, he continued to send her voice messages for the entire night to keep her company.

“We couldn’t hold a conversation when we were married, but we’re able to do so now. We encourage each other too,” she admitted. “This is because the both of us are willing to give and take. I’m willing to treat him well and he’s willing to accept my goodwill. We are both receptive to each other showing concern.”

Eric and Bao Ma got married in 1972 and have two daughters, Taiwanese host Bowie Tsang and Tsang Wing Yee, together. They filed for divorce after three years of marriage, reportedly because he spent more time with his friends than with her. Despite going their separate ways, Bao Ma continued to care for his parents, which earned her praise from the public. When Eric’s older brother, Tsang Zhiqiang passed away in 2016, Bao Ma also helped out with his funeral.

In 2004, Eric praised Bao Ma for how she's always been very responsible. "She has raised our daughters well. She has been looking after my parents very well, so much so that it’s as though she’s still the Tsang family’s daughter-in-law," he said. 

This is not the first time Eric has had to deal with a loved one suffering from cancer. His second wife Rebecca Chu, who migrated to Canada in the '90s with their two sons, recently passed away, reportedly from cancer.
