PETALING JAYA: Four games, four goals. Negri Sembilan have unearthed a new hitman and his name is Joseph Esso (pic).
The 28-year-old Ghanaian striker has wasted no time making his mark at Negri Sembilan, scoring twice in the Super League and twice in the FA Cup to become the team’s go-to finisher. Calm, composed, and clinical, Esso looks right at home in Malaysian football.
But the new hitman is quick to share the credit.
“I thank God for everything, and I’m grateful to the club, the coach, the staff, and the fans for making me feel at home,” said Esso.
But Esso is quick to turn the spotlight away from himself.
“First I thank God for everything He’s doing in my life. I’m happy with my goals for this great club,” he said.
Key to his success has been the chemistry with his attacking partners – Japanese playmaker Takumi Sasaki, Bosnian winger Jovan Motika, and local talent A. Selvan – a quartet that have transformed Negri’s frontline.
Esso also reserves high praise for coach Nidzam Jamil, whom he calls “one of the most intelligent coaches” he’s ever worked with, admiring his tactical insight and man-management skills.
Despite his hot streak, Esso remains focused on the bigger picture.
“Making this club great is our goal. We’ll keep improving and give our best,” he said ahead of Negri’s FA Cup last-16 second leg against Police on Sunday, where they hold a commanding 5-0 lead.
