Abhishek and Vihari Poddar’s fourth annual Diwali party was riotous and fun. More than 100 guests showed up at the Yantra restaurant in Tanglin Mall bearing gifts and well wishes for the family. The venue was transformed into four areas: A dance floor decorated with a hand-carved wooden swing and matching backdrop specially commissioned from Bombay, a dining section with scented flowers and tea lights, a buffet room, and a chill-out room. Chef Hemant Oberoi concocted an extravagant vegetarian buffet spread that included mains like martabaan ke chole, paneer makhani, kurkuri bhindi, sudzi mandi, jeera aloo, and dal makhani. There was also an assortment of Indian breads and rice, and even a live pasta station serving penne and spaghetti cooked á la minute. While children played out in the yard with sparklers, parents lounged inside. The guests also busied themselves with selecting party favours of rings, anklets, bindies, brooches or bracelets, and getting henna tattoos. Entertainment came in the form of The Bhangra Boys, who taught guests six short dance routines that can be associated loosely to the movements of changing the light bulb, sweeping the floor, tossing the prata, catching a mosquito, washing dishes, and riding the motorcycle!
