Ex Model Nadya Hutagalung Told Her 3 Children Not To Have Kids As The World Is Overpopulated

While former model and ex MTV Asia VJ Nadya Hutagalung has three kids, she recently revealed that she has no interest in becoming a grandmother and has even advised her children not to have kids.

The 50-year-old recently gave her interesting take on Kumar Vs The World, a 10-part series hosted by Singapore comedian Kumar.

Episode two focused on Singapore’s falling birth rate, with a panel that included Ah Boy Noah Yap, 987 DJ Germaine Tan, former GOLD 905 radio host Vernetta Lopez, and comedian Haresh Tilani.

Prefacing that her opinion might be unpopular, Nadya said, “It’s not up to me, of course, but I’ve told my kids not to have children.”

The statement drew audible gasps from her fellow panellists, prompting Nadya to elaborate further.

For context, Nadya has three children.

Tyrone, 30, and Fynn, 22, from previous relationships, and 17-year-old Alex, formerly Nyla, her youngest child with husband and former national swimmer Desmond Koh.

Alex now identifies as gender-neutral.

“I love my kids, but as an environmentalist, the world is overpopulated. The world simply cannot sustain more people,” she reiterated.

Nadya, who is also a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme, shared that her views were shaped by stark changes on our planet.

“Before he [my first son] was born, the sea was full of coral, like all different shapes, colour, sizes, it was like a completely different world, right? So beautiful… Then, when I went diving again, after he was born, already the fish were in fish traps, already the coral was broken, already there was plastic floating on top of the sea,” she said.

“So I said to myself, if in my lifetime, in such a short period of time, this world has changed so much, imagine in his lifetime?” Nadya added.

After the clip was posted to Instagram, it garnered a host of differing opinions.

While some praised Nadya’s perspective, many strongly disagreed, even calling the narrative an exaggeration.

“The overpopulation myth has long been debunked. A small, wealthy minority is responsible for most of the world’s resource consumption,” read a comment.

Another wrote, “It’s better to teach your kids to be sustainable for the environment, rather than telling them not to have kids”.

To top it off, one netizen called Nadya out, writing, “Quite rich coming from someone who not only has one, but three kids, right?”

The clip has since garnered over 50K views on Instagram.
