It lingered for about an hour, looking sharp in some places and faint in others—not a portal for spirits, just a cool sky show. A solar halo happens when sunlight passes through tiny ice crystals in high, cold clouds (not the usual water-droplet kind). The crystals bend the light to form a ring. The most common type is the 22° halo, meaning the ring sits about 22 degrees from the Sun. These halos are uncommon but not unheard of. They’re often hidden by lower clouds, so we don’t always notice them. We’ve seen a few in recent years, including one in March; they’re hard to predict, which is why the 25 Aug halo surprised everyone. It’s fine to admire the ring, but don’t stare directly at the Sun without proper protection. If you want a safer look (and a nicer shot), use your phone or view it indirectly.
