FATHER ANGRY AT SON FOR “WASTING TIME” ON ITE CERT, SAY HE SHOULD WORK INSTEAD
Am I in the wrong ?
Context my dad got mad and starting arguing with me saying why am I wasting my time studying from Nitec to local poly which took 5 years.
He said that I should’ve have just work full time and get private diploma. He told me that he has friends who took private diploma and earning 6 figures yearly and calling me stupid for not listening to him .
He said that I’m wasting my time in my 20s where I could’ve have work full time and save up private diploma , marriage and house .
I just started my diploma will complete in 2 years time where I will be reaching my early 30. So am I that stupid/wrong to pursue this route?
Wish I can rent a room but it’s too expensive for me. He even got so mad he ask me to fight him when I told him that violence is not the answer.
I’m afraid if this continue one of us might really fight and if things get out of hand one of us might seriously be injured . Any advice ?
is he successful like his friends? Earning those 6 figures with their private diploma
if he is successful like his friends, why didn’t he help you for ur tuition fees cos private diploma/degrees are not cheap. Did he not think about the fact that you can’t afford it?
does he know that having the diploma does not equates to one being able to earn 6 figures? It is just a piece of paper that opens up minimum job requirements
you are not wasting your time, especially when you are investing the time to upskill yourself (e.g studying/taking courses). He is just simply comparing your timeline with other people. Please don’t compare, everybody have their own pace
Advice is, if you’re really concern/affected, it’s fine to apply for part time diploma courses and work at the same time. But studying + work is not easy

Pls, don’t get angry with your son status. This is exactly what my son gone thru. 2yrs in ITE, Higher Nitec 2yrs, then to polytechnic 3yrs, then service NS @ 23. Out from NS @25. The rest is up to him to move forward. Most importantly, good attitude, character, behaviour, social & be safe & healthy. What’s the point forcing our children to be highly educated if they commit negative things.
