An explosion at the Selangor campus of Malaysia’s private institution HELP University has left one person dead and nine others injured, with two in serious condition, according to Malaysian media reports.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil said the incident occurred at about 11.40am on Monday (Jan 12) at a cafeteria located on the fourth floor of the university’s campus in Damansara Heights, Selangor.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the blast happened while two technicians were carrying out repair works on an air-conditioning compressor. One of the technicians was killed, while the other was among those injured.

Authorities said the university was on holiday at the time, and there were not many students on site when the explosion occurred. The injured include university personnel, cafeteria workers and students, the reports said.

Investigations are ongoing, but police have indicated there is no criminal element involved in the incident at this stage.
