For Friday the 13th, We Dare You to Check Out These Celeb Superstitions
Even superstars have superstitions.
Whether it's knocking on wood or throwing salt over the shoulder, celebrities are doing what they can to navigate the mysteries of the universe. In fact, many in Hollywood often look to astrology and numerology for guidance—even on Friday the 13th.
After all, several stars were born on the so-called unlucky day, including Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen, who came into the world on June 13, 1986, as well as Riverdale’s Lili Reinhart, who was born on Friday Sept. 13, 1996.
And take Taylor Swift, who has embraced the number 13 wholeheartedly.
"I was born on the 13th. I turned 13 on Friday the 13th," she explained to MTV in 2009. "My first album went gold in 13 weeks. My first No. 1 song had a 13-second intro. Every time I've won an award I've been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter."
The "Blank Space" singer continued, "Basically whenever a 13 comes up in my life, it’s a good thing."
That's why many of her famous Easter eggs revolve around the number—like when she dropped her 2020 album Folklore and its sister record Evermore on the year she turned 31.
"Ever since I was 13," she wrote on X (formerly Twitter) at the time, "I've been excited about turning 31 because it's my lucky number backwards."
And many fans believe Taylor's lucky number also played a part in helping her boyfriend Travis Kelce win the Super Bowl in 2024. As it turned out, that was her 13th time at a Kansas City Chiefs game.
Additionally, Travis was playing against the San Francisco 49ers, whose digits added up to—you guessed it—13.
But for Paris Hilton, 11 is her lucky number. In fact, she named her company 11:11 Media because of the lore behind the special time code, which is said to be an encouraging sign from the universe.
“It’s my favorite time of day,” she told the Wall Street Journal in 2021. "I love posting on Twitter at 11:11 to remind myself and my fans to ‘make a wish,’ keep taking risks and keep dreaming."

The singer is obsessed with the number 13 and incorporates it in her life and career. She was even born on December 13, 1989.
"Every time I've won an award I've been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter," she told MTV in 2009. "Basically whenever a 13 comes up in my life, it’s a good thing."
The actress said on Conan in 2009 that she deals with her fear of flying by listening to Britney Spears music, saying, "I know for a fact it's not in my destiny to die listening to a Britney Spears album, so I always put that on in my [headphones] when I'm flying because I know it won't crash if I've got Britney on."
The supermodel and Project Runway host travels with a bag of her own baby teeth for good luck.
"We don’t have a tooth fairy [in Germany] so I put them in a little bag," she explained during a 1998 appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. "It’s just a crazy thing that I do."
"I'm a very spiritual person. I travel with my crystals. I've got all different colors. It's just something that I'm into," the fashion designer and Spice Girls singer told Us Weekly in 2011. "I am quite a superstitious person. I don't walk under a ladder. If I see a magpie, I salute."
Before her retirement, the tennis star would bring shower sandals to the court, tie her shoelaces a specific way, wear the same pair of socks during a tournament run and bounce the ball exactly five times before her first serve and twice before her second, according to Men's Fitness.
"I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone," the singer told Vanity Fair in 2010, "they're going to take my creativity from me through my vagina."
"I have a few kind of lucky mascots," Game of Thrones' Jon Snow told Condé Nast Traveler in 2012. "I've got a lucky pen—it's one I've had since I was a kid, and I carry it everywhere. And I haven't lost it yet, I've lost everything else. I'm kind of OCD, actually. Every time I get on a plane I have to touch the outside of the plane three times before I get in."
"If I walk on to an airplane, I always have to go on with my right foot first and tap the outside of the plane," she once told The Insider. "I have always done it for luck."
"For me, there are about 18 things I have to do before I can go out to perform—most of them are too ridiculous to repeat," the Coldplay frontman told the Melbourne Herald Sun. "One is I have to brush my teeth before I go on stage, otherwise I just don't feel smart."
"I knock on wood all day long...constantly," the actress told Cosmopolitan in 2000. "But I've also flown on Friday the 13th in a storm with a black cat on my lap, so I'm not that superstitious."
"Don't walk under ladders," InStyle quoted the actress as saying. "My mom just walked under one yesterday and I was like, 'Oh my god, I can't believe you just did that!' I've never walked under a ladder, ever."
"I walk under ladders, I do all that stuff," the Oscar winner said, per InStyle. "I do it on purpose. I like provoking superstitions."
