Freddie Prinze Jr. Gets "Bad" Marriage Advice About Sarah Michelle Gellar Romance

E! News·2025-07-08 10:02

After more than 22 years of wedded bliss, Freddie Prinze Jr. still thinks wife Sarah Michelle Gellar is all that.

That's why the She's All That star doesn't need any outside guidance on how to keep the spark in his decades-long marriage to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress.

"I've never gotten any good advice," Freddie told E! News with a laugh during an exclusive interview. "Most of the marriage advice came from dudes that were divorced that thought we would get divorced, too. They were trying to deal with their own issues."

Besides, the 49-year-old believes advice is "like peanut butter."

"I may think it's delicious, but if you're allergic, you're dead," he explained. "So, it doesn't always apply as well as we would hope. I've gotten a lot of bad advice about marriage."

However, Freddie is especially excited to spend the next decade with Sarah, with whom shares kids Charlotte, 15, and Rocky, 12.

"Dana Carvey said his 50s were the best years of his marriage that he's experienced," Freddie shared of the comedian, who has been married to Paula Zwagerman since 1983. "I'm almost 50, so I'm looking forward to that."

And with his and Sarah's 23rd anniversary coming up in September, the Scooby-Doo alum plans to keep the celebration simple—just like their longtime relationship.

"You don't have to do anything fancy for 23," Freddie quipped. "We're pretty relaxed and private, so we just keep things chill."

The couple first met while filming 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. Though Sarah's character was not brought back from the dead for the slasher franchise's upcoming installment, Freddie said his wife did not have FOMO when she learned that he'd be reprising his role of Ray Bronson for the Jennifer Kaytin Robinson-directed sequel.

"That's just not in Sarah's make-up," he shared. "She was more excited that we were getting to do something that takes really big swings."

Plus, Freddie jokingly noted that Sarah, 48, already got a chance to work with Jennifer on 2022's Do Revenge.

"Sarah and Jen were already friends before this movie," he added. "She knew how much the two of us were committed to this new story."

Also costarring Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers and Sarah Pidgeon, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer hits theaters July 18.
