A netizen shared how she visited her boyfriend’s mother for Chinese New Year and they had nothing to talk about, and they ended up just sitting there watching TV for 2 hours in silence.

Here is the story:

My bf makes it compulsory for mutual CNY family visitations. I appreciate that thoughtfulness. He comes with me to 拜年 (Mandarin for house visitation) to my parents, and I’m supposed to go to his place to 拜年 to his mum. I’m generally okay with that tbh.

The only problem is – his mum is REALLY quiet. I tried initiating conversation with small talk, but after some time topic buay gam then forget it.

So we end up sitting on the sofa – three of us – staring at the Chinese-dubbed Korean drama for two hours! I was so incredibly bored I kept hinting to him that I’m done and ready to leave.

My bf then asked me why I’m not talking to his mum. Huh?!? Eh hello, I tried leh. I’m also not say jialat at small talk since my job requires that I do that quite often. ???? But topic buay gum.

For the last few years, I’ve been so busy I have no time to watch TV.  I have no idea what to talk about that would interest her. And the responses only one word one word.

A conversation is two-way right – how is it fair to expect me to keep the conversation warm when it’s a one-sided effort???

My own family comes with its own self-high button, so it’s infinitely more fun to 拜年 and hang out with. Wah every year I dread going over to his place sia. I’ve never been so bored to death. Damn it.

Editor’s note: Same, I just sit in the living room and watch TV in silence at my relative’s home every CNY.
