Cucumber Melon and Warm Vanilla Sugar from Bath & Body Works ruled my pre-teen years, and I still tend to gravitate toward vanilla-infused scents as an adult. But Gen Z is breaking away from the food-based smells and finding their signature scent from a very unexpected influence: their grandmothers!

According to Glamour, perfume that “remind you of your sweet grandma’s living room” are becoming popular, including vintage floral, musty, and soapy scents.

“To me, a grandma fragrance simply refers to a vintage scent that people often associate with an older generation – I don’t view it as a negative term,” Camryn Kim, the TikTok fragrance aficionado behind Cammy Reviews, told Glamour. “It can actually be quite meaningful when said with kindness. It reminds me of my grandmothers, both of whom have incredible taste that’s been really influential in shaping my own.”

Gen Z is drawn to the nostalgic aspect of these classic perfumes, and while some fruity, vanilla, and other notes are sometimes included in best-selling perfumes, they aren’t necessarily the top scent right now. Allure has also reported on the classic fragrance revival happening, with rose, volet, lavender, and other floral notes becoming popular once again thanks to Gen Z consumers.

“Brands used to try and bury these notes, but instead of hiding them as a supporting structure within the fragrance, they’re the star of the show and people are actively seeking them out,” Jeniece Trizzino, vice president of innovation and physical product at Scentbird, told Allure.
